AFAC's Backpack Buddies program provides weekend and holiday meal packs for food-insecure Arlington County schoolchildren. A recent study commissioned by AFAC and conducted by Virginia Tech's Center for Social Research estimates that as many as 9,400 children in Arlington are food insecure. For many of these children, their lunchtime meal at school is their only meal each day. Over weekends and holiday breaks, these children often go with little to no food. AFAC's Backpack Buddies program strives to help these children stay nourished at home. Each week, dedicated volunteers deliver weekend meal kits to school social workers so they can discreetly distribute this food to students most in need. Reducing stigma and increasing accessibility to this nutritious food helps put their focus on school and being the best students they can be. Children and families who benefit from the Backpack Buddies program are able to spend more quality time at the table and less time worrying about where to find their next healthy meal. If you think your child would benefit from a weekend Backpack Buddies kit, contact your Arlington Public School social worker for more information. The Backpack Buddies program runs year-round. AFAC coordinates with all of the Arlington Public Schools as well as several community centers, aftercare programs, and summer camps to make sure all children in our community have the food they need when the weekend comes. The food for the Backpack Buddies program is more expensive than other food AFAC purchases for the families in our care because it is prepackaged and prepared. AFAC purchases all the items for the Backpack Buddies kits to ensure quality, freshness, and low cost.

Nowadays we are having a very unstable and crazy weather. They are nothing like the ones that we usually had in the past. There are many extreme weather conditions everywhere. In some places, there are intolerably hot days; and in other parts, the cold is unbearable. Those strange weather anomalies happen because of the global warming which is a process where the heat of the sun cannot be reflected back to the sky and thus be trapped inside the earth by the greenhouse gases. This greenhouse gas is the cause of the whole weather problem and this gas is caused when we burn the fossil fuel. So there are many scientists who try to find an alternative source of energy. And one of the proven sources is the sun. Just by using the solar panel to catch the heat of the sun, we can then transform the heat into some other kind of energy.
Solar panel can be used in many ways. One of the ways is to carry a solar panel backpack anywhere you go. Aside from buying a load of extra batteries, solar bags offer an innovative way of charging your gadgets whilst away from common power sources. This orange backpack is made from 600D polyester fabric, which is tough, waterproof, light weight and UV resistant. The substrate is an aluminum and plastic composite, specifically designed to be strong and lightweight. They can easily stand up to typical outdoor use including being dropped and leaned on. 80mm solar panel in the front which utilises integrated photovoltaic cells to capture natural light. Limited by the panel's size, it is not designed to charge laptops, however it can charge cell phones, PDAs, GPSs, iPods, cameras and other portable consumer electronics. The panel is mounted in a flexible fabric sleeve. It articulates with the bag, which means it doesn't feel rigid or restrictive. Even if you manage to break it, which would probably take a conscious effort, it can easily be removed and replaced. Another important feature is the internal storage battery which stores the power caught by the solar panel until you need it.
When not in the sun, the battery can be charged using the AC travel charger or DC car charger. Four to six hours of direct sunlight can produce enough energy to fully charge a typical cell phone. If you need to charge your laptop on the go, we have much bigger and more powerful solar panels to cater to your request, which can fully charge a laptop in about five hours of full sunshine. This backpack has high density padding in the shoulder straps and back. Its waist strap is removable. It also carries an adjustable phone / MP3 pouch on the shoulder. The mesh backing material used in the bag leads to better air flow. On you request, we can also add a fully padded laptop sleeve inside the backpack. Solar bags offer an eco-friendly way of re-charging your devices. The energy is free, you no longer have to use the mains and it means that you can go some way to reducing your carbon footprint. You can either use it as a weekend hike bag or as a large daypack. Order it now and next time when you are on the road you will not have a life-dependent gadget such as an iPhone or Blackberry in your hand and no power to run it.
